What baking has in common with building a business... it's in the dough

To launch and grow a successful small business, keep an open mind (and open ears).

Not long ago, while out for a morning walk in Prospect Park, I was asked to provide expert commentary for an episode of the first season of New York Life’s “Love Takes Action” podcast.

This episode would feature a female entrepreneur talking about her journey. I was intrigued… and I said yes.

The business owner is Rachel Wyman and she is the founder of Rabble Rise Doughnuts (formerly Montclair Bread Co.) in Montclair, NJ.

Her story is a lesson in how to start and grow a thriving, successful company and, since we’ve hopefully gotten through the worst of pandemic, how to survive when life throws a major curveball.

As those of you who know me well are aware, I am definitely one who is big on preparation and note-taking, but this podcast interview took that to another level.

I was so awed by Rachel's story that the first 30 minutes of the rough edit took me two hours to go through, at which point, I stopped to order her cookbook "Will Run for Donuts," before wrapping up the rest.

As you’ll discover in her interview, Rachel did so many things right. It was hard for me to choose which of those things to highlight.

A taste (pun intended) of some of them:

  • The importance of community

  • Using constraints to your advantage

  • Making small bets

  • Bringing your inherent traits and interests to your business

  • Knowing your strong suit and hiring to fill the gaps

  • And more…

Hopefully, I chose the right ones. And hopefully our conversations with host Ellen Adair are helpful to you.

Give it a listen and let me know what the takeaways are for you.

Until next time.

Katherine

p.s. the episode may make you very hungry for donuts 🍩
