In the new world of A.I., how do you value what you do?

Female founder, this is not a trick question.

Normally, I come armed with answers in each post I share. But this time, on the topic of Generative A.I. (Learned Language Models) and our businesses, I realized what’s needed are good questions.

_____

Generative A.I. (aka machine learning).

The topic is Generative A.I. (think ChatGPT) and how we might think about it in terms of our businesses.

It’s been coming up on monthly coaching calls with my 1:1 clients. And I’ve seen it written about in pretty much every online publication, several blog posts, and social media captions, and heard it discussed in videos and on podcasts.

It could be that it’s a fad that blows out as quickly as it blew in. But most experts don’t think that’s the case. Most believe that this moment is on par with the creation of the Internet as we know it.

In other words, a sea change is coming, and every business owner needs to get up to speed.

This is not the time to adopt an ostrich-with-your-head-in-the-sand position.

_____

What (I believe) it means for you. The part I know.

No matter what business you’re in, you should be using it as a tool to save time — either yours personally or that of your team members — so that you can focus on your high-value activities.

“Many workers are already using the tool in their jobs. The chatbot has written home descriptions for real estate agents, job descriptions for hiring managers, and sales pitches for marketers.

It excels at formulaic writing tasks because it mimics text that already exists online. House listings often feel canned, as do sales pitches, making it easy for ChatGPT to complete first drafts of those types of assignments.”

_____

Some examples of ways to use A.I. in your business to save you (or even your VA) time:

  • Email subject line ideas

  • Blog post titles and opening paragraphs with specified keywords

  • Social media captions

  • Video scripts with a specific tone/voice

  • Presentation slides

  • Blog post summaries to use as LinkedIn or other social posts

  • Research and data gathering

  • The list goes on…

Generative A.I. tools can give you a great starting point for content creation — providing you with a first draft so you’re not starting with a blank screen.

And it can get you information more quickly and more succinctly than your basic Google Search when you’re researching ideas (or even planning your next vacation).

And it’s not just ChatGPT. For content creation, there’s Jasmine, DALL-E 2, and more. Even Canva has generative A.I. functionality - for design and writing (Magic Write).

Ideally, this leaves you with more time for impactful, creative work that only you can do.

_____

The questions. The part I don’t know.

Here are some of the questions I’ve been pondering of late:

  • What is the eventual impact on Google Search?

  • Will Bing become more relevant and gain market share with the ChatGPT integration?

  • What does it mean for SEO?

  • What other uses are there that can potentially save time or produce a better “product”?

  • What is the impact on service-based businesses?

  • What happens when the time it takes you to produce your “product” is reduced — will you still charge the same fee/rate?

  • How should that reclaimed time be spent?

  • Can (and should) you replace team members? What happens when their time is cut in half?
