How to get control of your time

Stop creating your own stress.

There have been times when I’ve looked at my calendar and my brain starts to spin and my heart starts to beat very quickly.

What I was looking at was a calendar where important meetings, requiring prep work, were scheduled back-to-back leaving little time to do the work to show up in the best way possible.

I’ve gotten much better at managing this but I’m not immune. I get excited. I say yes. I don’t think things through.

Only to realize I may have “bitten off more than I can chew."

I’m thinking perhaps you’ve done the same.

_____

Why this topic now?

Over the past few weeks, I counseled female founders who’ve found themselves in situations where they are seriously crunched for time.

They began calendar blocking, which is great, but their calendars resemble the colorful version of Jenga.

Leave it as is and there was no breathing room, literally and figuratively. Pull one piece out and the whole thing falls apart.

While some of the scheduled activities were must-dos with little flexibility in terms of timing, others weren’t.

The committed timeframe for the deliverables was set by them, not the client, prospect, or collaborator. They had created the urgency.

Once they saw this, they realized that in some cases they could reclaim their power.

They could change the originally committed date, pushing it out to give themselves some much-needed time and space.

_____

How you can use this in your business.

Before you commit to something, take a look at your (time-blocked) calendar.

See what’s already on your plate and when you can reasonably schedule the work that needs to be done. Block that time and give yourself some “wiggle room.”

THEN, commit to your delivery date.

Your body will thank you.
