Work-life balance is a myth

I want to offer up a mindset shift for your well-being… in your business and life.

You’ve heard me say it before… you can do it all, you just can’t do it all right now. And by that, I mean all of your business ideas and passions at the same time.

But I recently had a conversation that extends this idea beyond business to all parts of life.

It was with Positive Psychology Coach, Corporate Well-Being Facilitator (and lovely human) Julie Fischer.

When we spoke, she shared her belief that work-life balance is a bunch of bologna and she subscribes instead to what she calls harmony.

Color me intrigued.

Then I caught the recent episode of Julie’s Nine to Thrive: The Well-Being Podcast titled “Balance is Bulls@#$: Reframing our Conversation Around Work, Life and Well-Being Mich Bondesio.”

And now I’m thinking differently.

_____

Beyond balance.

Julie and her guest Mich Bondesio share a common belief that informs their philosophies and the power of their alternative approaches to managing this thing called life.

As Mich Bondesio shared:

“Balance is a static concept and it sets us up to fail…

“To have everything in balance means that we can’t move in order to maintain that balance. And so when we are out of balance which is more often the case than not, it’s telling our brain that we’re failing because we can’t keep everything even or balanced or level.

And the reality is that at any given moment, there’s one thing in our life that’s demanding more than the rest, whether it’s our relationships or our work life or our health or our financial situation, there’s always something.

But we still need to be able to move forward across all aspects of our life. So how can we do that even when one part of our life is demanding more of our attention than the rest? Well, this is where this idea of cadence comes in.”

And from Julie:

“Cadence, rhythm, pace, flow… I talked about the word harmony when I decided that balance was bull, I started using the word harmony because harmony is the thing that brings it together.

And cadence, it’s fluid. There’s a movement to it. Life is always going to be moving. There is always going to be motion… If we want to move forward, there is motion. We need forward motion to do that.”

Both harmony and cadence are based on the practice of making continuous micro-adjustments, rather than big, sweeping changes. And on being in a dance with life.

I love this idea. Just the thought of it creates space, takes the pressure off, makes it so that not everything needs to be a priority now.
