Business Lessons Learned From Playing WORDLE
Wordle for the Win…
My strategy when playing WORDLE is to start with the same word each day (ditto for Quordle) - aka “my word.”
I’ve yet to have the sheer luck of it being the day's WORDLE. Thus, I don’t have any “1's” on my Stats. That said, I do have a few “2’s.”
Where it gets interesting (and challenging) is when I have one letter or no letters. It's where my strategy comes into play.
My approach is this:
→ Make my best guest at any word using letters NOT in my word
→ Then, depending on the letters revealed from that test, it may be necessary to try what I call a “throwaway word” - one you know is likely not the right word, but by going with it, you’re doing a test
→ You’re learning what letters ARE be in the word and what letters that are NOT in the word
→ So you can get closer to what the word might be
→ So that on your next attempt, you have a real shot at getting it right
At this point you may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with my business?
It’s this.
When you first launch or pivot your business - you’ve:
→ Thought through your approach
→ Done your research
→ Spoken to lots of people (potential clients in your target market, other entrepreneurs, financial advisors)\
→ Developed your marketing strategy,
→ And made your assumptions about what should work
Then you put it out there. And maybe you had success with your first attempt (“your word”). But perhaps your results were not what you expected.
What do you do now?
Here is what I suggest:
→ Look at your results - what worked, what didn’t, what patterns can you identify (what letters are in the WORDLE, which aren’t)
→ From this assessment, what changes can you make to your offering, approach to marketing, etc. to test a different, more advanced scenario next (your next best estimate of the correct WORDLE
→ You may not be sure if this will work, but you need to try out your new approach with these modified variables to know (your next attempt at the WORDLE)
→ Measure your results
→ Refine the variables in your business, until you get it right
I am not suggesting that your business is a game and that there are not profound consequences.
I am suggesting that there are lessons you can learn from games (and other things in life), that have the power to be highly instructive.
As you may have experienced in the first half of 2022, the business climate keeps changing at a fairly rapid pace. With this, having a nimble, open, always-learning mindset can be a key to your success.
